Session Recording

Record terminal sessions to asciicast v2 files for playback and sharing.

TermPod can record terminal sessions to asciicast v2 files — the same format used by asciinema. Recordings capture all terminal output with precise timing, so playback looks exactly like the original session.

Quick Start

  1. Open a terminal session
  2. Start recording: Shell > Record Session (or Cmd+Shift+R)
  3. A red recording indicator appears in the tab bar
  4. Run your commands as normal
  5. Stop recording: Shell > Record Session again (or Cmd+Shift+R)
  6. Choose a save location — the file is saved as .cast

File Format

Recordings use the asciicast v2 format:

{"version":2,"width":120,"height":40,"timestamp":1710000000}
[0.5,"o","$ "]
[1.2,"o","git status\r\n"]
[1.8,"o","On branch main\r\n"]
  • Line 1: Header with terminal dimensions and start timestamp
  • Subsequent lines: [elapsed_seconds, "o", "output_data"] events

Playback

asciinema

# Install asciinema
brew install asciinema

# Play a recording
asciinema play recording.cast

# Play at 2x speed
asciinema play -s 2 recording.cast

Embed in docs

Upload to asciinema.org or self-host with the asciinema player:

<div id="player"></div>
<script src="https://unpkg.com/asciinema-player@3/dist/bundle/asciinema-player.min.js"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="https://unpkg.com/asciinema-player@3/dist/bundle/asciinema-player.css" />
<script>
  AsciinemaPlayer.create('recording.cast', document.getElementById('player'));
</script>

What Gets Recorded

  • All terminal output (stdout/stderr) with millisecond-accurate timing
  • Terminal dimensions at recording start

What Is NOT Recorded

  • Input (keystrokes) — only output events are captured
  • Terminal resize events during recording
  • Data from other sessions — recording is per-session

Keyboard Shortcut

Toggle recordingCmd+Shift+R

The same shortcut starts and stops recording. You can also use the Shell > Record Session menu item.
